Youth Find Work Worthwhile A

quote attributed to Theodore Roosevelt states “Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to

work hard at work worth doing.” Offering low-to-moderate income New Haven youth (ages 14-21) this opportunity through paid year-round or summer employment, New Haven’s Youth@Work program is now accepting applica- tions for summer 2012. Last summer, 667 youth were placed in 82 workplaces. Youth@Work’s school-year program is currently serving 80 students at 47 worksites. The program provides students with more than just a paycheck. It teaches job-readiness skills, such as resume writing, interviewing, communication, and work ethics, and connects youth with adult mentors/role models. Jobs include: nonprofit organiza- tions (e.g.: LEAP, Boys and Girls clubs, Solar Youth); public service organizations (e.g.: Parks and Recreation, Board of Education, Housing Authority); and private partners (e.g.: Yale New Haven Hospital, Community Foundation, Consultation Center). Also at the heart of the program is encouragement for students to continue staying in school, with participants required to show their report card as assurance. Interested in supporting the program? Sponsoring one youth in a summer job costs $1100, so donations are welcome (checks can be made out to City of New Haven and mailed to Department
