International airport is the overnight small package centre for the New York, New Jersey region, offering a full range of airline services to domestic and international destinations. The airport expanded its cargo capacity in 2004 with the opening of a 142,000 square foot facility which, combined with the cargo buildings of major airlines United and Continental, increased the cargo space at the airport to 1.3 million square feet. The gateway processed 860,845 tons of cargo and 82,479 tons of air mail in 2010. The latest available figures from Newark show it handled 827,389 tons of cargo and 83,191 tons of air mail for the 12- month period ended 31 October 2011. The airport said that air freight had continued its recent pattern of decline for the past seven months up to 31 October, falling 15.7 percent on a 9.8 percent drop in freighter operations.

freight performance is the arrival of new freighter routes, the most recent being Doha-based Qatar Airways, which launched a B777 freighter service to Hartsfield-Jackson via Luxembourg on 2 November. Over and above its operational side, Hartsfield-Jackson is preparing to play host later this year to the 50th anniversary staging of the biennial Air Cargo Forum Conference and Exposition being put on by The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA).

Capital group ranks airport demand A
report from international capital group Jones Lang LaSalle shows that last year’s surge in global trade and higher cargo volumes has spurred demand for warehousing space around many US airports. The company’s Airport Real Estate Index measures the nation’s top 12 airports against prevailing criteria including cargo volumes, infrastructure plans and real estate conditions. Topping the index is Los Angeles International airport, which has
strong cargo volumes, a low industrial real estate vacancy rate, and several multi-million-dollar investment plans under way. New York JFK airport is listed in second place. With high demand for warehouse space driving vacancy rates down to a low 3.4 percent, JFK is also noted as being one of the most space-constrained US airports – and it has the highest rents. While Chicago O’Hare airport has a relatively high vacancy rate of 14.2 percent, it ranks third because it is a hub for major airlines such as United and American and it has a vigorous modernisation programme in place. Following Los Angeles, New York JFK and Chicago O’Hare in the Jones Lang LaSalle Airport Real Estate Index ranking are Miami, Anchorage, Memphis, Newark Liberty, Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Louisville, Indianapolis and Oakland.
