Miami currently handles around 2 million tonnes of air freight a year, of which some 90 percent is international freight. In 2010, the economic worth of trade handled through the airport was valued at US$50.7 billion, comprising 41 percent of Florida’s total air and sea trade with the world.


West coast leader As the largest air cargo gateway on the US west coast, fifth-placed Los Angeles International airport (LAX) has not seen any year-over-year growth in its air freight throughput since March last year. Tonnage at the airport was down by 5.3 percent for the first 10 months of 2011 compared to the same period a year earlier. Air freight volume fell by 10.7 percent in October, the steepest decline of the year, and a

A new cold warehouse near LAX could help the region import more perishables instead of them making a lengthy detour on their way to Southern California. “There is ample room for Los Angeles to grow in moving perishables,” said David A Herbst, executive vice president of Mercury Air Group, the holding company of Apollo Freight which operates the 16,000-square-foot warehouse that is able to handle 100 tons a day of delicate perishable items. The region is so far behind that the opening of the new facility increased the area’s refrigerated warehouse space for air freight by 35.5 percent, said Victor J Adducie, general manager for Apollo Freight, a subsidiary of Mercury Air Group. The new refrigerated facility is what


the region needs if LAX is to improve its meagre share of air freight in perishables, said Jock O’Connell, international trade advisor for Beacon Economics, an indpendent economic research and consulting firm.


Chicago gateway In November last year, number six entrant Chicago O’Hare International airport became the first US gateway to handle cargo arriving on a commercial service operated by the new fuel-efficient B747-8 freighter aircraft flying from London Stansted airport via Frankfurt.

O’Hare, Chicago Rockford International airport sees itself as a valuable addition to the region’s air freight offering, marketing itself as a faster, easy-to-navigate, cheaper alternative to O’Hare, enabling air freight to arrive at its destination as fast as or faster than it does from aircraft landing in Chicago. Ken Ryan, cargo director at Chicago Rockford International airport, said the alternative gateway notched up a big success in its air cargo ambitions when two chartered Atlas Air B747Fs loaded with Chinese freight landed in early November.
