Philadelphia International airport was the only gateway to see its cargo tonnage fall in 2010, with a 3.2 percent drop registered year-on-year


But Chicago Department of Aviation commissioner Rosemarie S Andolino nonetheless noted: “O’Hare is the global gateway to our city and is a leader for air cargo. As new runways and taxiways continue to be built under the O’Hare Modernization Program, O’Hare has the capacity and infrastructure needed to support the expanding global cargo industry.”

New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) operates seventh-placed New York John F Kennedy International airport, under a lease with the City of New York, along with the Newark Liberty, LaGuardia and Stewart International gateways.


The economic impact of the 4,930-acre air gateway on the region is reflected in the fact that JFK alone contributes about $31 billion in economic activity to the New York/New Jersey region, generating some 233,000 jobs and about $11.3 billion in wages and salaries.

With nine miles of runways, the airport is one of the world’s leading international air cargo centres, with two main facilities totalling 430,000 square feet of warehouse and office space. The airport has more than one million square feet of office and warehouse space dedicated to broker, freight forwarder and container freight station operators who do business within the New York/New Jersey region. For the 12-month period to 31 October 2011, JFK processed nearly 1.4 million tons of cargo – a 1 percent year-on-year increase – and 99,049 tons of air mail.
