Angeles and came back through the facility the next afternoon on its return journey to Hong Kong. Anchorage and second-string Alaskan airport Fairbanks have been working on making their facilities compatible with these new aircraft by modifying taxiways and runways. As with number one US cargo gateway Memphis, the gateway at third place in the US cargo airport league, Louisville International airport, is an integrator hub, this time for express carrier and package delivery company UPS. It ranks at number ten in the world league, with more than 4.7 billion lb (2.1 million tons) of freight and mail processed in 2010.


To handle expected growth levels the airport has a Beyond 2010 programme in place, part of which comprises the construction of a new parallel taxiway able to handle the largest and newest long-range commercial aircraft.


Perishables capital In fourth place, Florida’s Miami International airport is the traditional gateway into the US for perishables from Latin America on their way to an eager market of consumers in North America.


Many other American airports have attempted in recent years to lure away their own share of this valuable trade, but few are likely to enjoy a


lasting success – although the Fresh Air Cargo facility run by Tradewinds Cargo Handling at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental airport and the perishables complex at Hartsfield- Jackson Atlanta International airport are serious offerings designed to capture some of Miami’s air freight volumes. According to Chris Mangos,


director, marketing division, Miami International airport, the gateway partners with nearly 95 airlines, all of which contribute “to the year-round, two-way cargo traffic that links the Americas with the high growth markets in Asia, Europe, the Middle East/Gulf Region and beyond”.
