Despite the prevailing forecast of a weak start to this year, the top ten US air freight gateways are all reporting improved performances during 2011 – and they are upgrading their cargo facilities to keep pace with growth expected in the future

Only three airports in the US managed to make the most recent top ten list of world air cargo gateways as compiled by Airports Council International (ACI) – the integrator hubs of Memphis and Louisville as well as the Alaskan freight crossroads in Anchorage. hile passenger traffic will always drive the fortunes of most airports, paying


the US in terms of annual tonnage processed is Tennessee’s Memphis International airport, a position it has maintained for at least the last 15 years through being the home hub of integrator giant FedEx. While moving freight remains the main strength of Memphis, the facility lost its distinction as the world’s busiest cargo airport last year to Hong Kong. Nonetheless, the Federal Aviation Administration has pumped millions of dollars into the facility’s infrastructure and FedEx has expanded its hub at the airport, ensuring its position as North America’s busiest gateway for cargo. Despite the slowdown in China and the turmoil in the European economy,


which affected freight volumes,the integrator reported strong quarterly profits in December – so the airport looks well placed to continue its run at the top of the league. FedEx also recently revealed an order for 27 new B767 freighters to replace the ageing MD-10F workhorses operating out of its Memphis hub.


In second place, Anchorage Ted Stevens International airport has secured its future as an international transit cargo hub, according to officials at the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation. During December Cathay Pacific


flew in the first 140-tonne payload B747-8 freighter to land in Anchorage. It was on its way to Los
