country, there is less mainstream publicity surrounding the fact that India’s already healthy industrial and commercial base is booming and more than 200 million middle class professionals within India are doing quite nicely, thank you – and that represents a larger well-to-do consumer sector than can be found in the United States. A huge proportion of the Indian


population is highly educated and it is surprisingly young – over 35 percent of the country’s 1.2 billion population is below the age of 20


and by 2020 it is expected that 325 million people in India will be of working age. Rising incomes in the country’s


commercial sector are leading to soaring aspirations among this huge band of young professionals. This new generation dreams of the lifestyle success it can achieve while growing India’s high-tech, high-value export potential. And this will certainly help to boost the import market for costly, air freighted luxury products. But the multimodal logistics


industry in India is perceived by many to be quite disorganised. Its airport system needs to be dragged into the 21st century – although some US$10 billion was invested in airport development in the country between 2005 and 2010 – and India’s trunk road network is still a nightmare. The logistics industry is not yet growing at a great speed. Over the next five years there are plans to expand India’s airport network, providing connectivity to around 35 non-metro gateways, and to modernise two major airports in Chennai and
