FREIGHT FORWARDER FOCUS LATIN AMERICA FEATURE
“The other change is a positive
evolution in Customs,” she went on. “These are still complex in places like Colombia, Peru and Argentina, but in Chile the processes have moved forward a huge way and become much more simple, clear and transparent. Even Brazil has evolved very positively with new processes and industry regulations.” For Riachi at Panalpina: “The biggest
change this year is that airlines have been entering the Andina region to compete and offer more capacity. For example, LAN Chile entered Colombia, Avianca bought TACA and they have a new B767-300 operating into Colombia. “Also, a major player is Centurion,
which has a new fleet, having exchanged its DC-10Fs for MD-11Fs. The outlook here is for very strong competition as Avianca and LAN add more capacity and try to achieve a better balance between northbound and southbound loads. This means for us that there is more equipment in the market and the rates should drop, or at least remain stable,” he hopes.
Developing hubs Ribeiro also feels that intra-regional distribution needs to be developed in order to facilitate the implementation of hub and spoke operations such as those used in Europe and the US. Ceva currently has a hub in Panama – “where Customs procedures are easier” – moving goods by sea to Panama and flying them to northern Latin America, which is well served by airlines from Panama. “This is cheaper than using air all the way and shorter than using ocean all the way so it’s pretty efficient,” she said, adding: “I wish we could see more of this type of activity.
Panalpina expects to see more intra-
Latin American air freight volumes, as well as growth in exports of textiles, shoes and consumables to Central America. Riachi declared: “We (in the Andina area) are also very interested in the growth of perishables; our idea is to start our own flight operations from Bogotá and Lima to Miami. “General cargo to North America is on
the up too. For imports, we are focused on air freight from the US. We want to balance our north and southbound traffic so we can achieve better negotiations with the carriers,” he said. Canales, speaking for Panalpina’s
Mercosur region, outlined: “We are planning to expand aggressively into the logistics market over the next three years. We have had good results with this so far. The logistics services will complement our core air and ocean activities so that we can offer a complete supply chain solution with full shipment visibility. “In Mercosur, we need to imitate the
Andina region’s strong perishables market. We need to complement our southbound traffic with northbound, especially as we are now operating our own flight and we want to add more frequencies,” he informed. This is Panalpina’s B747-400F Brazilian Wings express service, operated by Atlas Air, which offers an airport-to-airport transit time of 30 hours from Hong Kong via Huntsville, Alabama to São Paulo.
