easy to comprehend. Product and component availability ratios, for example, are always a large part of the unknown.” He points out that Cisco conducts

regular reviews of a supplier’s business operations to assess its adherence “to each point of our Supplier Code of Conduct. We have multiple Cisco- sponsored audit teams verifying our audited data.” Hofstee revealed an area where

supply chain monitoring is an essential part of the process. “With a high-end product such as ours, we require a certain amount of special care from our air carrier.” Cisco has highly-defined parameters and “if something goes outside the threshold, we have to look at the root causes – and change it.” He emphasised: “Having end-to-end

visibility of the various phases in the supply chain is critical. Cargo 2000 is something we expect the forwarder to use when managing its carriers. At the same time we also use the forwarding capacity of the integrators, where Cargo 2000 procedures are not adopted, but we do acknowledge that they have end- to-end visibility of their processes.”

Security issues Hofstee confirmed that crime in the supply chain is an enormous problem and that a constant awareness of its presence is a big step towards controlling this plague. “It is amazing how much security has changed in 10

years,” he said. “We collaborate with all standards to make sure we can meet our customer requirements. Our central warehousing meets full TAPA (Transported Asset Protection Association) standards and we expect those we work with to have similar systems. “We have applied for known shipper

status. We stipulate the use of box trailers, not curtainsides, for transportation from warehouse to airport, and in certain areas GPS tracking is used. If our product is stolen, it will be recognised as soon as it pops up on a network because of its IP address. But, nevertheless, our products are the type of systems that allow the financial markets to operate effectively, the banks, governments, tax systems and other vital areas – so we take security very seriously indeed to help protect the integrity of these markets.” Finally, Hofstee outlined a ‘wish list’

that could improve everyday operation of the supply chain. “Cargo 2000 is not known or applied throughout the whole industry and that is a situation that could be improved,” he remarked. “Scalable, repeatable and transparent ways of operating would be an enormous help. I would say that having an overall harmonisation of industry processes, requirements and regulations would be the ‘Holy Grail’ that we are searching for to help us get the job done.”
