USA: Mid-Atlantic States
CAPITAL IDEAS W
With iconic attractions in New York and Washington plus a diverse range of attractions beyond, the seven Mid-Atlantic states offer city break and touring options galore, says Howard Carr
orld-famous gateways such as New York and Washington ensure that
the Mid-Atlantic region of the US is well established on the city-breaks scene. In fact, such is the timeless lure of the likes of Manhattan in New York and the White House in the capital that many visitors do not explore beyond the cities. Yet the area’s diverse range of
attractions – from magnificent mountains and fun-filled beach resorts to Amish countryside and pretty fishing villages – makes touring holidays well worth recommending. The region covers seven states and the District of Columbia, from New York and Pennsylvania in the north
to Virginia in the south. In total, the Mid- Atlantic region is nearly double the area of the UK. New York has plenty to offer beyond

the Big Apple. The beautiful Hudson Valley, with elegant mansions and picturesque riverside towns, is less than a two-hour drive from the city. The state is also home to the mountain scenery of the Catskills and Adirondacks, vineyards and stretches of crystal-clear water in the Finger Lakes, and beaches and plush homes on Long Island. Following the unveiling of the 9/11 Memorial in New York City in 2010 the focus will again be on Lower Manhattan in September 2012 with the opening of the 9/11 Museum. Collectively, the three museums will house the biggest collection of Renoir paintings outside Paris and more works by Cezanne than in the French capital. Elsewhere in Pennsylvania, highlights within easy reach of Philadelphia include the Amish farming communities of Lancaster County and the Civil War battlefield of Gettysburg. Atlantic City in New Jersey is one of the biggest seaside resorts on the east
coast. It’s just a one-hour drive from Philadelphia and two and a half hours from New York. With casinos, spas, a four-mile
boardwalk and glittering nightlife, it’s making a big play for the UK market following the appointment of the Greg Evans Consultancy as its UK representative. Operators featuring the destination for the first time include Bon Voyage and Hayes & Jarvis. Tiny Delaware is one of the smallest
states in the US. The first state to ratify the US constitution in 1797, it is rich in historical sites. Maryland, Virginia and Washington
market themselves as the Capital Region. As well as the capital city’s iconic landmarks, the area includes the harbour city of Baltimore, beautiful Chesapeake Bay and the old maritime
