UP CLOSE & PERSONAL

BY LAURA GELDER As soon as I left my Hanoi hotel the moist, heavy heat covered me like a wet flannel. I stepped straight into a market, which occupied every inch of the alley outside. The metallic scent of red meat hung in the air with fragrant coriander, splashes of colour came from bright pink dragon fruit, with its electric green scales and the bartering cries of tonal Vietnamese rang out in the small space. The roads were a dragon-roar of hundreds of motorcycles and I watched the

slow but confident progress of wizened

vendors in conical hats, balancing baguettes across their hunched shoulders and letting the traffic stream around them. By dark, Bia Hoi stalls opened, selling their home brew at 25p a dusty glass, perfect with a bowl of steaming beef pho, flavoured with aromatic herbs and enjoyed on a rickety plastic chair at the side of the pavement.
