PRESTON gUILD 2012
Join street parties, processions and a whole host of Guild activities to celebrate England’s oldest festival taking place in Britain’s youngest city. This opportunity only comes once every 20 years!
SO WHAT IS THE PRESTON gUILD?
The Preston Guild is the last remaining Guild celebration in the UK and is England’s oldest festival. It was 1179 when King henry II gave the town its first royal charter and granted Preston the right to have a Guild merchant, protecting the business of local traders, craftsmen and merchants. These locals swore loyalty to the mayor and the Guild to become a burgess (the name given to members of the Guild merchant).
alongside the ceremony and tradition of the Guild Court and the later adjournment of the Guild Court for another 20 years! The 10 day city festival encompasses many of these traditions alongside a full programme of arts and cultural events and celebrations. here are a few highlights:
Processions 1st Guild Trades Procession 3rd Guild Churches Procession 7th Guild Community Procession 8th Guild Torchlight Procession
The first reliably recorded celebration of the Guild was 1397 and from 1542 it was decided these should take place just once every generation (every 20 years) and would be celebrated with feastings, processions and great social gatherings. Apart from one interruption to their regularity, the Preston Guild has continued to be one of Lancashire’s biggest and most anticipated celebrations with memories handed down from generation to generation.
In 2012 the traditional Guild Week has been extended to 10 days to celebrate 10 years as a city, but you’ll find there is lots happening throughout the whole year.
