OUR TOP 5 PLAcES FOR gETTINg THE ‘WITcH FAcTOR’
1. Take a walk to the top of Pendle hill – at 557 metres high it’s not quite a mountain but you’ll be rewarded with bewitching views across Lancashire and beyond.
2. Lancaster Castle - This medieval stronghold is home to the court where the famous Lancashire witches were tried and found guilty in 1612. Take a tour of the court rooms and imagine the rap of the gavel announcing a death sentence. If you’re feeling brave, experience being locked in one of the dark and chilling prison cells (it’s scary stuff).
3. At Clitheroe Castle museum you can journey through 350 million years of history, heritage and geology of the local area. In the shadow of Pendle hill, the infamous witches travelled through Clitheroe en route to Lancaster and there’s an exhibition detailing their ill-fated story in the museum.
4. Pendle heritage Centre in Barrowford marks the beginning of the Lancashire Witch driving trail which takes you across the county to Lancaster on a route similar to that taken by the so called witches. As well as being able to grab a cup of tea and a
homemade cake in the garden tearoom, you can also learn more about the history of the area.
5. visit Gawthorpe hall in Burnley from 31 march–8 July for the new exhibition 'A Wonderfull Discovery' - The Lancashire Witches 1612-2012, which will reflect on the trial of 1612 in the context of religion, superstition, and modern day persecution.
