ARcHITEcTURE HERE IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD.....
Award-winning photographer Sean Conboy travels across the globe photographing the world’s very best buildings, with the world’s very best cameras.
Specialising in architecture and interior shots, Sean, 49, is Blackpool born and bred. he started his career here in 1980 and now lives in nearby Pilling.
Sean says: “As a kid, Blackpool got me really excited about photography and capturing fantastic images on film. Growing up here does mean I have a real soft spot for the resort; but I can also take a step back. I’ve been hugely lucky and travelled extensively with my work, photographing hundreds of buildings and I can tell you those in Blackpool are categorically some of the most beautiful in the world.”
Sean meets a lot of people with an interest in architecture at conferences and award ceremonies worldwide and he believes that Blackpool’s reputation for great architecture should be shouted from the rooftops.
he says: “I always sing Blackpool’s praises when I’m on my travels and I never tire of the look on people’s faces when they see my photos of the buildings and realise where they are. A judge in one of the competitions I won actually announced on stage how wonderful the winning shots were ‘of a theatre in Florence’. I had to put him straight as they were in fact of The Blackpool Grand Theatre!”
The judge is not the only one who has been surprised - and that’s why Sean believes Blackpool’s reputation for great architecture needs to be more widely known - so that everyone can experience it.
he continues: “Sometimes I do come across people who share my passion for the architecture of Blackpool in unexpected places and that’s always refreshing. In the dancing world in Russia, for example, everyone knows about the The Tower Ballroom. We all need to value and celebrate these buildings.”
Recently Sean has been working on a campaign to promote brand new 60 megapixel cameras from hasselblad cameras.
The Grand Theatre
he said: “The campaign is designed to show the quality of the cameras so I needed to find buildings with some really fantastic detail because the campaign will allow users to zoom in on details of the architecture. It was great to travel to Dubai to photograph the iconic luxury Burj Al Arab hotel; but it was equally fantastic to come home and shoot Blackpool’s newly refurbished Winter Gardens and Grand Theatre.
“The refurbishment of the Winter Gardens is really quite fantastic and great news for the town. It had got to quite a sad stage and to see it back to its true glory is brilliant. The uncovered plasterwork in the coffee shop is stunning and it has been a privilege to photograph it.”
