TRAMS
BLAcKPOOL TRAMS 'THE ONLY WAY TO TRAvEL'.
Like a trip up the Tower, a journey on the trams forms an essential part of any Blackpool visit. It’s quite simply the perfect way to travel through the town - with the spectacular coastline on one side and the famous Golden Mile on the other.
What a lot of people don’t realise is that the description of that 'golden mile' employs quite a bit of artistic licence – the distance from the Pleasure Beach in the south to the Tower is actually more like three miles - so the tram is the perfect way to take the strain off your feet!
Originally advertised as ‘the only way to travel’, the whole line runs for 12 miles from Starr Gate in the south of the resort to Fleetwood Ferry in the north; stopping near to all the major attractions along the way.
Trams have been a permanent fixture in the resort since 1885, when Blackpool originally blazed a transport trail with the introduction of its revolutionary tramcar system - and it’s the only place in the UK that has retained it continuously ever since.
This Easter, the resort will be the worldwide launchpad for the state-of-the-art new FLEXITY 2 tram from Bombardier, the largest manufacturer of light rail vehicles in the world. The 16 new state-of-the-art vehicles have a first-class focus on passenger comfort and safety – with accessibility features to ensure that everyone can enjoy the ride.
And don’t despair if you love the traditional Blackpool vehicles, the £100m upgrade will see heritage tramcars run side-by-side with the new models; meaning visitors can continue to experience an authentic (if slightly less rumbly!) ride on one of the oldest electric tramways in the world.
The famous Illuminations trams, beloved of many generations of children, will also still offer a wonderful way to experience Blackpool’s annual light show. Whether you choose the Western Train, the Fisherman’s Friend Trawler or hmS Blackpool, all the family can whizz through the display without the hassle of driving.
All aboard for a fantastic family experience!

If you’re a brave soul; then rumour has it that on wet, stormy nights out of season a ghost tram can be heard rumbling along the tracks before squealing to a halt – but we’re not sure if it’ll be able to handle the new tracks!
