The reason that nails become brittle and peel is because the nail plate becomes dehdyrated. Virginie continues: “Nails can be brittle, and cuticles can split very easily because of the lack of hydration. Thermal gloves should be worn outside throughout the Winter months to save them from harsh elements and from losing excess moisture.”

Audrey agrees: “Colder weather has a real drying effect on the hands and this needs to be treated in order to keep the moisture in the skin. Moisturising hands daily and wearing gloves in the colder months can help a lot in caring for hands.”

“The best way to maintain good moisture and oil content within the skin is to use a specified hand cream, developed to take into account the factors above,” Virginie adds.

Yvette Christy, Marketing Manager for Calgel, agrees: “It’s so important to use moisturiser (hand and cuticle), oils and even have a deluxe manicure where oil and cream is applied to the hand and then placed in hot mittens.”

For an intensive moisturising treatment, Audrey recommends Paraffin Wax. “Paraffin wax is a great service to add to any manicure for the treatment of really dry, damaged skin due to the cold weather. Offer your clients a paraffin treatment at a reduced price to entice them to come again to have the treatment,” she says.

When skin around the nail plate becomes dry it can lead to tearing of the skin and subsequent infections. Exfoliation of this dry skin as part of your client’s homecare routine will prevent this and eliminate unsightly cracked skin. What’s more, this will stimulate the matrix area, promoting healthy nail growth.

Nail growth reduces during theWinter months, due to the reduced amount of Vitamin D generated by our bodies through exposure to ultra violet rays at this time of year. Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin as it is responsible for generating vitamin D in our bodies. To encourage nail growth, gently shape the nails’ free edges - the body reacts by replacing the body’s defence mechanism, i.e. the nail grows. Show your clients how to do this at home between appointments. Gentle buffing of the nail plate also stimulates cell reproduction.

Micromanicures

As well as traditional manicure treatments, you should also consider offering effective anti-ageing hand treatments, using microdermabrasion or light therapy.

“The constant temperature changes from centrally heated rooms to the cold outdoors can take its toll, leaving hands looking aged,” explains Angela Barbagelata-Fabes, Chairman of The Carlton Group. “Sun damage during the

Summer months, and areas of discolouration on the skin, also affect the look of the hands. Microdermabrasion offers a way to improve the skin on the hands.”

Angela continues: “Microdermabrasion is a gentle mechanical peeling process which helps skin to improve its regenerative capabilities. The aim of the treatment is to restore the balance of healthy cells and dead Corneocytes needed for our protection from the environment. Microdermabrasion is used to treat skin problems such as scars and pigmentation abnormalities but its main use by beauty therapists is regeneration.”

Carlton Professional’s CC2315 ChromaPeel includes Diamond Dermabrasion, Colour Therapy and Brushing all in one compact machine. Using a diamond peeling system, which smoothes and regenerates the skin, ChromaPeel simply takes the natural process of skin renewal, which slows down as we age, and hastens it. A perfect treatment for aged skin, ChromaPeel leaves the skin feeling soft and silky and looking radiant.

In addition, there are no crystals and therefore no vacuum required to remove them. The treatment is fast and virtually silent, as the diamond discs glide effortlessly over the skin performing the perfect peel. The four variable speeds and choice of two diamond-encrusted heads, which are supplied with the machine, allow the treatment to be tailored for any skin type, from sensitive to oily.

ChromaPeel also features a brushing option which loosens the dead skin cells, increases blood flow to the skin and helps to eliminate toxins and waste, brightening the skin and giving it a youthful glow. Used in combination or separately, the Colour Therapy treatment stimulates the skin’s cells to facilitate change.

Four pulsed modes are also included which allow penetration of the wavelengths into the skin at different levels providing stimulation for the epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous tissue and deep into the circulatory system.
