LIVE AUCTION Auction to build on 2010 success
Last year’s inaugural and hugely successful live auction is returning to the Property Investor Show & OPPLive for 2011. The auction, starting
on Friday 14 October at 12 noon and held in conjunction with auction specialist
MustBeSold.com, will see over 150 lots go under the hammer. Ahead of the show,
investors can get a taste of the property auction world by attending the ‘Finding great deals at auction – and how to buy them’ seminar, hosted by managing director of Essential Information Group David Sandeman, on Thursday (Room 1, 11:30) and Friday (Room 1, 10:45).
SIPP ZONE SIPP Zone returns and could save your retirement
Pensions are in focus again as the Self Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) zone, coordinated by property consultancy Intelligent Partnership, returns for its third consecutive year. Alistair Burns, co-
founder of TailorMade SIPP Ltd, who will exhibit in the zone, said: “We have been staggered by the growth over the last year, and particularly in the last six months, in the interest we have seen in people starting their own SIPP.” Burns, along with Robin
Hooper, chief executive of The Lifetime SIPP Ltd, will discuss ‘How a SIPP Could Save Your Retirement Plans’ on Thursday (15:00, room 4), Friday (13:00, room 3) and
Saturday (13:45, room 5). According to Hooper,
“more than 800,000 people in the UK have now taken direct charge of their own pensions through a SIPP. And this figure is expected to triple within the next two years.” Guy Tolhurst, managing
director of Intelligent Partnership, will be among the panellists on Thursday discussing ‘How the sector will fare after RDR and the new FSA crackdown on unregulated collective investment schemes’ (12:00, room 6). Tolhurst said: “The
catalyst for many new SIPP owners is to get started with a review and projection of
their existing pension arrangements and find them somewhat wanting.” The firm Food, Water
& Energy will also be at the zone discussing South American farmland investments via SIPPs, as will Green Oil Plantations, a company focused on investments in plant- derived alternative energy sources.

NEWS IN BRIEF Show chance for pros
Property professionals can get ahead of the game at this year’s show according to the Association of International Property Professionals’ chief executive Mark Sharp. “It’s the only show where
Sandeman will also host the seminar on Saturday (Room 5, 15:15). James Cokayne, who will be bringing down the hammer on the lots at the show, is hopeful that sales will match those of last year, when £9 million-worth of property was sold. “We are hopeful the sales will match up to last year,”
he said. “The market is quite precarious at the moment but there is still a lot of good property out there for the right price.” “Now is an excellent time
to buy, I believe. If you do buy now, when prices are at an all-time low, you can look back on it in a few years and consider it a very good investment.”
you can meet like-minded professionals for business purposes,” says Sharp. “For us over the years it has been fantastic. It is so important in the industry to get people meeting and networking and the show provides that platform.” Sharp added that he believes emerging markets are coming into focus after a year of frantic economic activity. “Emerging markets are becoming strong whereas the well-known ones are slowing a bit, and a lot of this comes down to the economy. Places like Brazil, India and China, for instance, are recording positive GDP growth and this is providing a boost.”
Egyptian revival?
The Egyptian property market is being buoyed after the recent democratic uprising, with the consensus opinion being that a new democratic regime and freer market will bring prosper- ity. And expert advice is on hand at the Property Investor Show & OPP Live to guide people on the matter. Speakers including Egypt Real director Peter Mitry and Egyptian Experience’s Jennette Bradbury will be on hand to debate ‘When will real stability and reassurance return to the Egyptian overseas property sector (Thursday, room 5, 11:15)? Egyptian master selling agent Orbit Alliance will also be exhibiting its range of invest- ment alternatives, including its SIPP-compliant Samra Bay hotel resort in the Golden Mile area of New Hurghada. Orbit’s Barry Clark will also be taking part in the Egyptian debate.
