Welcome to the Gastronomy Issue

On 23rd September, France celebrated the first Fête de la Gastronomie. With food and drink an essential part of any celebration, it is rather fitting that the art of good eating now has a celebration of its own.

Gastronomy is much broader than just gourmet dining. It’s sensory and emotive, encouraging the discovery, experience and understanding of taste and smell. From the everyday to the extraordinary, gastronomy brings memories alive again. For me, just the sight of beouf tomatoes and I’m back in my teens shopping with my mother in the markets of St Germain Paris; the smell of lavender and I’m touring Provence with university friends; spices and I’m in Muscat’s Old Muttrah Souk; a Bloody Mary – its 2002 and I’ve had my first taste of luxury, just off Concorde and into St Regis’ Old King Cole bar.

For others, it might be a fine steak and a glass of Malbec on the ranch at El Colibri in Argentina or handmade tortillas and pit-roasted pork in Hacienda Tekik de Regil in the Yucatan. Valerie Wilson Travel advisor Brandi Brister’s personal highlight of her Californian tour was in the Napa Valley learning the processes of how grapes grown from the earth turn into something delicious on the table; and how wine has been engrained in so many cultures across the world for hundreds of years. Larry Martin of Food and Wine Trails’ highlight was taking the Executive Chef of California’s Chez Panisse to prepare lunch for Food+Wine readers at Château Dauzac in Margaux.

Meanwhile Brazilian foodies are heading to Japan according to Daniela Hispagnol of Gouté. Sao Paulo has the largest concentration of Japanese outside of Japan, so Paulistas are keen to discover its culture and traditions as well as its many Michelin starred restaurants.

We are sure you will agree that with the introduction of a Gastronomic Travel seminar amongst others and Gastro Bar created by Relais and Chateau, not to mention the hundreds of products, ILTM 2011 will be La Fête du Voyage Gastronomique.
