Understated gastronomy

Londoners continue their love affair with casual dining and yet, whilst far from being laissez-faire, Heston Blumenthal is the sweetheart of British gastronomy. Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, not to mention his ‘meat fruit’, is lauded by all who are lucky enough to get a table. Nevertheless, the scientifi c chef’s master creations shouldn’t overshadow the hotel’s more understated gastronomic offering – Bar Boulud.

Bar Boulud – the casual alternative to Dinner – opened in May 2010 and has the rare quality of being equally enjoyable whatever time of the day you venture off London’s Knightsbridge. Long lunches, late dinners and now afternoon tea post

shopping at nearby Harvey Nichols or Harrods are all catered for. The relaxed, friendly ambience with its open kitchen and arguably one of the best charcuterie sharing boards ensures you feel like you’re having a dinner party at your home from home.

Bar Boulud playfully contrasts between relaxed and fi ne dining. Stained tablecloths adorn the walls but it’s Chateau Petrus that’s stained the cloth. Dinner maybe the Grand Cru but Bar Boulud is the fi nest new world wine – perfect for sharing with friends.
