“Life is a Song, Love is the Music”
I still remember my wife coming out of a department store with this decorative sign in her hands. She said I have
something that is so “you” for our new house. After seeing her enthusiasm and reading the saying, I quickly realized it was for “us” – two very different people who came together through a love for music.
I know our story isn’t so rare. As a matter of fact, I can immediately think of three lifelong friends who have been to our home and commented on the sign. All of us were in high school band together and while we each pursued different careers – communications, mechanical engineering, law enforcement and medical practice – we all credit our best memories and our start in life to school music. Best of all, it’s a gift we have all taken with us throughout life.
The study of music has a multitude of lifelong benefits… it develops creativity, self-expression, discipline and teamwork. It is a key contributor to success in all areas and certainly an integral part of any strong academic program. With its deep and intrinsic value, music transcends be- yond school globally to all walks of life, where it spans age groups and connects people and cultures bringing quality to life. Simply put, music is for life and it lasts a lifetime. In this issue of Wisconsin School Musician, also dedicated to the 2011 Wisconsin State Music Conference, we explore the special power of music throughout life.
