wsma student composition project
Student Composers Honored Tim Wurgler, Program Director
The WSMA Student Composition Project encourages and recognizes the efforts of Wisconsin’s student composers. This year a total of 60 submissions were received for the project with 49 submissions in the High School Division (grades 9-12) and 11 in the Middle School Division (grades 5-8). Ten submissions received Honor- able Mention distinctions and 18 students received awards based on merit in nine different categories including the newly added piano solo category.
The Student Composition Project provides student composers the opportunity to receive feedback regarding the positive qualities of his/her piece as well as provide ways to improve as a composer in the future. Each submission is reviewed and receives a written critique by a profes- sional composer. The panel of reviewers determines awards and winners. Division winners then receive a scholarship to study composition.
Awards were presented at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education in Waunakee on Saturday, August 20 during a reception.
2012 Application Deadline: March 9, 2012.
