comprehensive musicianship through performance

development time to be music department exclusive and not building based. The ad- ministrative team has already assumed that we will be continuing with this plan next year and is now asking us when it would be convenient for someone to come and meet with us to make sure we know about the core standards which will be the focus for the district.

Commitment

The last area to consider is commitment. Anything worth doing takes time and resources. We invited members of the CMP committee to come to Manitowoc and provide us with an opening introduc- tion to the process, a teaching demo and then an afternoon where the staff was able to work with the facilitators. Throughout the year we then worked on creating and implementing teaching plans. The music department budget team also set aside money to pay for staff tuition to enroll in the summer conference. This has been the greatest impetus to teaching improvement that we have done. Living and breathing CMP for a week with other teachers from different teaching experiences is one of the best things anyone or department can do for staff development. The increased understanding, commitment and joy that staff members have brought back have raised staff teaching ability, deepened thoughtful conversation and also made other curriculum areas take notice of music.

Wisconsin School Musician Sales, Service & Restoration of Fine Pianos

Each month a school is chosen to present to the school board a student-learning proj- ect that demonstrates AIW. In the past two years, three principals from all three levels have chosen to highlight the music depart- ment. I can’t help but feel it is because the principals have learned something new as well. Music is more than concerts. Music, taught with CMP in mind, offers students

opportunities to think, create, understand themselves and make connections to the world around them. Start those conversa- tions and keep encouraging each other to learn more!
