launchpad update Chase Promenade Wins Launchpad Competition

The Launchpad state finals competition ended on a high note for Wilmot High School’s Chase Promenade, the group that took home the coveted Les Paul Award for 2011. With three groups advancing from each of the four statewide regionals and the addition of the wild card online voting procedure through Broadjam, this year 13 bands qualified to perform at the state finals competition held June 11 at Wisconsin Union Theater. The 13 finalists all received the opportunity to perform at Sum- merfest in addition to receiving a digital recorder from Yamaha and a Shure microphone. Sue Baker, program director of the Les Paul Foundation, was also at the state finals to be a part of the excitement and provided several giveaways to audience and band members.

Through a sponsorship opportunity with Yamaha, three clinics were provided for students with the clinicians then acting as eval- uators for the finals. This unique opportunity allowed students to learn and discuss their music with performing and recording professionals. Clinicians were Lee Sklar on bass guitar, Susie Ibarra on drums, John Schauer on recording/sound technology and Hanah Jon Taylor on the art of improvisation.

Through an expanding partnership with WSMA, Yamaha will be providing an equipment package to the school music program of the winning Launchpad group. John Sorenson, Wilmot High School band director, will be able to choose from one of four packages that include a Yamaha silent string quartet, Clavinova, drum set or a live sound system. A presentation at the school will be made this fall.

Launchpad, now in its seventh year, has become one of the fastest growing and exciting WSMA programs offered to high school students. It encourages students to creatively put into practice lessons learned in your music program by applying in their own way what they have learned. Thank you to music teachers from
