band Music education strengthens 21st cen-

tury workplace skills. • Sharpens a student’s ability to comprehend abstractions.

• Improves problem-solving skills. • Strengthens both inductive and deductive reasoning.

• Develops teamwork through performances.

Music education strengthens students’ academic skills. • The study of music helps improve a student’s self-confidence.

• Regardless of socioeconomic back- ground, music-making students score higher on standardized tests.

• Research shows that music students are better equipped to comprehend mathematical and scientific concepts.

Music education strengthens students’ personal skills. • Improves hand eye coordination. • Improves student behavior and attitude.

• According to a study conducted at the University of Texas, college-aged music students have fewer problems with alcohol, are emotionally healthier and concen- trate better than their non-musical counterparts.

Although these benefits are understood by music educators, a constant but gentle reminder of these benefits to school offi- cials can aid in the preservation of school music programs during these difficult economic times.

So as you prepare for your students this school year, carefully consider pieces that will not only stimulate the mind, but will also feed the soul. This is a very challeng- ing time for all of us in education. But, we must remember the importance of what we teach. Music and compassion are food for the soul for all of humanity!
