SRI LANKAN WILDLIFE

The range and scope of Sri Lanka’s wildlife is truly remarkable. Some 12% of the island has been designated for wildlife protection and its park and sanctuaries provide a rich refuge for great herds of elephants, flocks of flamingos and, off its coasts, blue whales and endangered turtles.

LEOPARD SPOTTING As one of the best places in the world to spot these magnificent cats, places like Wilpattu and Yala National Parks provide ideal conditions for these large predators, with Yala reputedly holding the highest density of leopards anywhere.

WHALE WATCHING The coastal waters off Sri Lanka provide a haven for some of the densest populations of marine mammals in the world. During the whale watching season that runs between December and April, excursions can be arranged off the coast of Trincomalee or Galle and the south, to search for dolphins, blue and sperm whales.

BIRD WATCHING A bird watcher’s paradise, Sri Lanka enjoys a reputation for some of the most diverse bird life in Asia. Attracting some 400 species, including almost 200 migrant species, places like Sinharaja Rainforest and the Bundala Wetlands National Park are home to spoonbills, kingfishers and large flocks of greater flamingos.

MAHOORA SAFARI CAMPS The Mahoora experience offers mobile tented safari camps amongst many wildlife reserves, including Udawalawe and Wilpattu National Parks. The comfortable camps include full en suite facilities, full board and unlimited game drives, making them ideal for wildlife enthusiasts.
