DUNHUANG & TURPAN Set before the shimmering sands of the Gobi Desert, the oasis town of Dunhuang is home to the Magao Caves and the natural wonder of Crescent Moon Lake. In Turpan we find a rich vein of Uighur culture, along with the Thousand Buddha Caves and the remains of Gaochang, once a major staging post along the old Silk Road.


KASHGAR SUNDAY MARKET Held every Sunday throughout the year for centuries, the Kashgar market is one of the most famous and colourful bazaars in the world. Traders arrive from all over Central Asia for this bargaining extravaganza to sell local produce, arts and crafts, garments, knives, timber, coal or animals.


SHAOLIN TEMPLE, ZHENGZHOU


NEW Founded in the 5th Century, the Shaolin Temple was catapulted to fame by the popular ‘Kung Fu’ TV series of the 1970s. Today this


UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its Buddhist temples and pagoda forest, provides an absorbing setting for visitors of all ages, with a Kung Fu demonstration offering just a glimpse of the extraordinary prowess of the temple’s warrior monks.


HARBIN ICE FESTIVAL This annual festival is China’s greatest showpiece for ice art and attracts visitors from all over the world. Set in the arctic climates of north eastern China the Ice Festival is held between Christmas and late February. Harbin is reached by a flight from Beijing or Shanghai.


SANYA Lying at the southern end of Hainan Island, Sanya is home to some of the best beaches on the island. A great base from which to explore, and perhaps visit some of Hainan’s natural and cultural attractions such as the picturesque view from Wuzhi Mountain or the 350 metre Fengguoshu Waterfall.
