INDIA & THE SUBCONTINENT DELHI, AGRA & JAIPUR

Blessed with some of India’s most iconic monuments, including the fabulous Taj Mahal and the extraordinary ‘Palace of the Winds’, this distinguished trinity once lay at the heart of Indian power and prestige; the reminders of its colonial and imperial past providing magnificent backdrops to the India of today.

DELHI A glorious mix of colourful markets and historic treasures, Delhi is a rich amalgam of empiric ambitions that saw it prosper under the Mughals and the British. The Old City is a testament to the grandeur of India’s princely heritage, whereas New Delhi bristles with the creations of Sir Edwin Lutyens and the Raj of the 1930s.

WHERE TO STAY IN DELHI Amongst our personal favourites in the Indian capital:

MAIDENS HOTEL – Colonial charm and architecture set in 8 acres of gardens in a residential area with easy Metro access for the more independent

THE IMPERIAL HOTEL – One of the finest hotels in Asia offering colonial grandeur and elegance in a very central location

AGRA & BEYOND The world’s greatest monument to love, the Taj Mahal is the glittering centrepiece of the Mughal Empire’s once great capital, Agra. Other attractions are the marble mausoleum at Sikandra and deserted Fatehpur Sikri, a perfectly preserved royal city.

WHERE TO STAY IN AGRA Choose from a comfortable city hotel or upgrade to one of India’s finest hotels:

GATEWAY HOTEL – Gracious rooms, some with a Taj view, amidst 6 acres of landscaped gardens

OBEROI AMARVILÂS – Just 600 metres from the Taj Mahal offering unparalleled views and superb service

HERITAGE WALK, AGRA An alternative way of exploring Agra that few visitors experience, as part of a community based enterprise. A heritage walk takes you through a local village to some of its lesser visited sights, before offering a chance to watch sunset over the marble domes of the Taj Mahal.

JAIPUR & THE AMBER FORT The wonderful ‘Pink City’, Jaipur is filled with the magnificence of the Rajput princes, from the splendid Hawa Mahal or ‘Palace of the Winds’ to its remarkable 18th Century observatory with the largest sundial in the world. Less than an hour away lies the breathtaking Amber Fort, a spectacular fusion of Hindu and Muslim design.

WHERE TO STAY IN JAIPUR The ‘Pink City’ offers many options including:

SAMODE HAVELI – Centrally located, this former royal family’s suburban house offers 29 rooms and suites

JAI MAHAL PALACE – Set amidst 18 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, an incomparable Rajasthani palace located in the heart of the city.

DERA AMER Run by a Rajput family and located close to Jaipur, the camp lies in the hills behind Amber Fort, offering the chance to trek by elephant through the Aravalli Forest. Perfect as a day trip from Jaipur, the camp also offers elephant polo.
