JL Audio is the latest addition to the products offered at Memphis- based Sound Waves. It was requested by customers, said Sound Waves president Mike Irvin. “It’s a great brand and we saw the op- portunity to get it and give our customers what they want,” he said. Swamp Pop Sound Shop Orange, Texas


In a time when most retail businesses are simply happy


to stay in business, Orange, Texas-based Swamp Pop Sound Shop is exceeding its sales goals by wide margins. The store had jumps in sales each month from year to year, amounting to an overall 28 percent increase, said owner Don Crawford, who handles most of the sales himself. The retired Exxon Mobil safety engineer took over the store three years out of a lifelong desire to own a business and although it’s mobile electronics retail, he applied some of the business acumen he’s acquired over the years at the oil giant. “It’s basically lessons learned, and reusing those lessons,” he said. One way to draw more customers in was so simple it was bril-


liant. “We put some speakers next to the Autozone and Napa Auto Parts nearby and we played music loud enough where people heard it and were curious about us,” he said. “It was cheap advertising and got us 200 to 300 customers.” With two full-time employees and one part-time, the shop has stays busy – more than $700,000 in revenue from installa- tions has came in the past three years, Crawford said. He is especially proud that one of his installations, a Memphis brand 600-watt speaker and four-gauge power box that cost $1,100 with labor included, won the customer an award at a show going up against much more expensive systems. “We pretty well understand what we’re doing now,” Crawford said.
