Do you think it’s possible to become a competent Nail Technician with just one day’s training?

Berenice Sullivan

Award Winning Nail Technician and ITEC Nail Technology Teacher at the Beauty Academy

“Day courses in nail technology allow people to get a taste for the industry but it cannot teach them the skills to become a competent nail technician.”

“Day courses can sometimes lead to bad nail technicians, which then gives our industry a bad name. It is impossible to learn all the Anatomy & Physiology of the Nail, Nail Diseases and Disorders, Product Chemistry and Develop a new skill in just one day.

“There is no quick way into the industry; you need time, dedication and a lot of hard work – anyone who has succeeded as a successful nail technician has gone through these paces and knows that you cannot gain this overnight. Day courses have their place in the industry but more at an Advanced Level for creative workshops, troubleshooting, and perfecting existing skills.”

Audrey Heffernan

OPI Trainer for Hennessy Hair & Beauty Ltd

“In some cases depending on the experience of the therapist, yes it is possible, but if you have a beginner, then no I don’t think it is possible to become a competent Nail Technician with just one day’s training.”

“With this type of course you need a lot of demos and a lot of supervised practice to tell you where you are going wrong. You need to know what is a good nail and what is a bad nail before you leave the course and you need to be very confi dent in identifying that.

“Then you have conversion nail courses for people with experience in the industry, then, yes I do think it is possible to become a competent Nail Technician with just one day’s training.

“Having had experience in the training field, the feedback I get from nail technicians who have completed a one-day course is very positive and they are very confi dent before leaving.”

“No, in my opinion it is impossible. To become a fully rounded and competent Nail Technician takes many hours of training, practice and experience.”

“You might be able to learn all your theory in just one day, but that’s all it would be, a theoretical knowledge of a highly skilled profession.

“Nail professionals spends hours honing and perfecting their craft, attending numerous classes, researching new techniques and taking part in workshops to perfect the basics. Through this practice, education and experience they learn to troubleshoot and how to recommend the correct system or path of treatment to suit their individual clients needs.”

“One day is a joke, could you train a hairdresser in a day? Consumers need to realise that training is an investment in themselves and is never a waste - the cheap option never works.”

“I feel so strongly about this. People need to phone all the training providers and get a feel for them. Ask who will be teaching and how long have they been teaching. A three-day course is good but I

would say still not enough. For ITEC you need manicure and pedicure as a pre-requisite and then you do your gels and acrylics. That is the way it should be.

“I wish suppliers would employ good nail trainers as they would have clients for life coming back to buy products instead of the quick sale of a kit, and never using it again. Also there are a lot of Nail Technicians now just teaching others; they should all be trained tutors. People think I am mad but the only way to do something is to do it right!

“Training providers need to look long term and not about the quick sale of a kit, sorry but that is the way I feel. I have been teaching nails for over 17 years and all my tutors are all qualified tutors with NUI Galway.”

“To be competent at any job you need more than a day’s training. At Bio Sculpture although we offer one and two-day training courses, they are for ‘experienced technicians’.”

“This means a technician must have already studied and passed their exams in manicure. They should have gained experience from doing clients and therefore be ready to further their knowledge with additional courses.

“Our gel courses are designed for people to practice before they come back for their assessment four to six weeks later, giving them an opportunity to improve on what they have learnt and as they say ‘practice makes perfect’. The more nails you do, the better a Technician you become.”
