TAG-TEAM INTERVIEW Dean Barrett,

OFF THE RECORD

Bastion MD Dean Barrett catches up with 505 Games’ UK boss Ralph Pitt-Stanley

Managing Director, Bastion

Vs

So you're spending a lot of time with MMA fighters and rugby players at the moment. Is this to bolster your hard man image? After working with the No.1 selling brand Zumba, I’ve become rather accustomed to wearing sports paraphernalia within the office. Tomorrow is MMA lycra shorts day.

How would your team describe you in three words and how would you describe your

management philosophy? ‘Firm but fair’ or ‘calculated

risk taker’ are the two team suggestions that I’m prepared to share with you – there were others. My management philosophy reflects the way we work at 505 – Who Dares Wins.

505 punches above its weight on a regular basis. Where do you think you're going right and the big boys are going wrong? We don’t have massive budgets so we have to be smarter in our thinking. Zumbaproves that you don’t have to always buy your way to No.1.

Ralph Pitt-Stanley, UK Managing Director, 505 Games

With studios closing and the free-to-play model growing in strength, are we witnessing a new world order for the industry? Evolution has always been the way of the games industry. You’ve been around for such a long time now, I can’t help but feel you’re better suited to answer your own question. Tapes, 3.5” and 5.5” floppy disks, Acorn and Commodore 64 should help jog your memory.

you most and least like to be sitting in this year? There are no easy seats to sit in these days. But at a push Stuart Dinsey’s – first to hear the news has to be a good place to be in. Least: Dave Roberts – being a Wales supporter is a heartbreaking engagement.

What are your predictions for the rugby world cup? I’ve told myself it’s only a game. Don’t build yourself up for disappointment, all teams have a chance to win. Oh who am I kidding? Black all the way!

Milton Keynes. Why? As a member of the MK tourism board, I’d say the town’s benefits and pleasures cannot be summed up.

Try.

OK, the truth of the matter is that Ian Howe just loves a roundabout, so MK it was!

Tell us a 505 secret. Tim Woodley spends more time at airports than in the office.

Who will you be tagging next week? Sony DADC’s Rob Gross.

AND FINALLY The latest MCVJury Service debates whether or not the games industry undermines indie retailers by pandering to the bigger chains. David Reeves (then at SCEE) says: “I can remember a case when the head of a major chain in Germany threw his computer print-out at our president because we wouldn’t acquiesce to his demands. I like to think that we are fair to all. We certainly try to be – often at the risk of physical injury...”
