VANESSA ROONEY Sowing the seeds
With the fl oristry industry hit by the recession and facing stiff competition from supermarkets, Vanessa Rooney is using her Level 2 Certifi cate in Floristry to focus on customer service and grow her business.
My qualifi cation has given me the opportunity to set up my fl oristry business, which is based from my home. I want to build the business to include weddings, sympathy tributes and corporate work as well as demonstrations and workshops.
The qualifi cations I have achieved were a good starting point for working in the industry. I have acquired an excellent foundation in fl oristry skills and the principles of design, and had the chance to develop my own style – which

enables me to offer my customers a bespoke service. I’m currently taking orders by word of mouth but my website, which will become my shop window, is about to go live.
I’m really proud of my fl oristry achievements, especially as I had been out of education for a long time. Gaining my distinction grade at level 2 has really boosted my confi dence. If I look back 18 months I could not have imagined being in the position I am now, or winning Gold in the WorldSkills UK Floristry Intermediate 2010 competition.
I want to learn more and gain the qualifi cations I need to pass on what I’ve already learned. I’m a strong believer in continuing to increase your knowledge as this in turn feeds the appetite of creativity.
