GETTING CLOSER TO LEARNERS

Learning for everyone

With its bursary scheme giving more people access to learning, City & Guilds has been instrumental in removing barriers to training in 2009-2010.

For many learners, one of the biggest hurdles they face is how to pay for their training. For the past 10 years, City & Guilds has offered Access bursaries to enable the most promising learners to pursue their learning. In 2009-2010, we awarded 39 bursaries worth £86,191, and we also supported various livery company bursaries through matched funding. In addition, we supported students at the City & Guilds of London Art School and at the Engineering Faculty at Imperial College. A City & Guilds Access bursary put 19-year-old professional dancer,

Scott Wilson, on the road to achieving his ambitions. Scott began dancing at the age of six. After working in shows and on tours, he wanted more stability in his career. He started the City & Guilds Advanced Studio Professional and Complete Pilates qualifi cations in 2010 and, as a budding entrepreneur, anticipates running his own fi tness classes when he fi nishes. Scott’s story could have been quite

different without the City & Guilds Access bursary that helped him to fund his studies. ‘I found the course I wanted to do but it was extremely expensive,’ explains Scott. ‘I stumbled upon the Access bursary. The interviewers made me feel so relaxed. I came away feeling really positive.’ Ruth Bizley is a 44-year-old student from Lyme Regis who went back to

studying for similar reasons to Scott. ‘Many people want to learn but can’t afford the courses, especially as they may have to give up work,’ says Ruth, who began exploring options when her position as a special-needs teaching assistant came to an end. Ruth applied for an Access bursary to help pay her fees, accommodation and travel costs. She enrolled on two courses – Planning and Enabling Learning, and Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector – and says that without her bursary she would be struggling to fi nish her qualifi cations.
