In 2010, City & Guilds began a new initiative with the Desert Islands Education Centre to provide an Introductory Diploma in Travel and Tourism. Thanks to course-related work placements at the Desert Islands Resort, on Sir Bani Yas Island, off the UAE coast, Shikah Mohamed Al Ali is helping others build careers.
The tourism sector is one of the most important in my country. It isn’t easy to fi nd a suitable job at the moment in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and through the Desert Islands Education Centre I got the chance to study City & Guilds qualifi cations. They included the Diploma in Travel and Tourism, and English for Speakers of Other Languages, helping me improve my

writing and learn about different worldwide destinations.
The qualifi cations helped me a lot when I was a trainee. I learned about verbal and non-verbal communication. I also improved my telephone skills and learned how to work as a guide. I now know how to communicate with people as an employee and outside of work – I’m more confi dent about myself and I have more ambitions for the future.
I’m currently a Work Placement Offi cer at the Desert Islands Education Centre on Dalma Island and I want to help people fi nd jobs in the tourism sector. I believe in studying all through life and I want to make young Emiratis see that this is the best way to improve ourselves and our workplaces.
