For Fojan Nourouzi, leadership qualifi cations are not just about developing workplace skills, but also about gaining self-knowledge. Aged just 17, she has achieved the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) Level 2 Award in Team Leading and Effective Team Member Skills.
The leadership skills that I’ve learned on my ILM course helped me when I had the chance to lead a group of sixth formers after we took over the running of the school for a day. I hadn’t done anything so intense before and I wanted to see if I had potential – I really enjoyed it.
Learning about effective leadership techniques was challenging, and the ILM programme helped us to focus

and gave us the support we needed. There was a lot of theory but it was brought to life in an interesting way, and stopped us panicking! The course has helped me develop my self-knowledge, teamwork, communication and general life skills.
I didn’t know the processes involved in forming a team and I was worried about dealing with any potential confl ict. But, by learning the theory, I could see it was just a stage of the process that we had to get through.
This qualifi cation is not just a piece of paper – I’ve learned a lot about myself, and developed skills that I can use in any area of life. The programme has pushed me a step further and I feel that I have gained an advantage over other learners.
