Bespoke City & Guilds qualifi cations gave B&Q staff a new sense of career progression
Focusing on renewal
As environmental concerns created an agenda for change in the UK, City & Guilds developed relevant new qualifi cations and partnerships in 2009-2010.
Practical answers
As educational reform introduced a new set of arrangements for colleges and centres, City & Guilds was on hand to provide support and clarity in 2009-2010.
City & Guilds has continued to develop outstanding customer relationships with its centres, providing a complete Qualifi cations and Credit Framework (QCF) package in 2010, and delivering Functional Skills and apprenticeships to more customers than ever. Over 1300 qualifi cations have been accredited on the QCF – more than any other awarding organisation. To get to this stage, we kept in touch
with centres through seminars, events and guidance material. Before the nationwide launch of the QCF in September 2010, over 2500 centres and 340,000 learners were already working on QCF qualifi cations. The introduction of Functional Skills is also high on the qualifi cations agenda. Functional Skills plays a vital part in the structure of our growing range of apprenticeships, which saw a 9% increase in uptake last year compared with 2008-2009. More than ever, our apprenticeships help individual learners focus their skill sets, and also form the backbone of skills development programmes for large organisations such as Honda, B&Q and McDonalds.

Renewable energy sources look set to become increasingly important over the coming decades. In 2009-2010, City & Guilds developed qualifi cations to ensure the UK has enough engineers to install and maintain environmental technologies such as solar panels. City & Guilds was asked by
RenewableUK to lead the development of the renewable sector’s fi rst apprenticeship for wind turbine maintenance engineers in June 2009. By September 2009, all partners involved in the project were brought together to form the Renewable Energy Apprenticeship Programme (REAP). City & Guilds’ partners for the project included Siemens Wind Power UK; Weir Group; Carnegie College (based in Dunfermline); and the Energy & Utility College. In late 2010, the apprenticeship
was offi cially launched by the Scottish First Minister, Alex Salmond, at RenewableUK’s annual conference. This has been a big step forward for City & Guilds’ green skills strategy and has demonstrated the benefi ts of working with partners to achieve our goals in this area.
