“Looking back on the sudden jolt every business women and man experienced this time last year is something that we don’t want to have to experience too often in one’s lifetime,” says Careen Galligan of the Galligan Beauty Group. “The panic - the anger - the fear of what’s ahead... And then, you must say ‘hold on’ and put all that negative energy into looking at how to survive and get through.”

Lorraine and Careena Galligan are the entrepreneurs behind one of Ireland’s most successful beauty groups, started back in 1976 at a time when beauty therapy was far from the big business it is today. Back then it was not made easy for a business sector that was in its infancy or non-existent in Ireland, to develop and grow with the obstacles of high taxes, rates and a hesitancey from banks in recognising women in business.

Fortunately, the entrepreneurs can look back on those days now and consider, how what might have been viewed as big challenges and obstacles over the years have been transformed into golden opportunities.

“You have got to stay positive and focussed and most importantly continue to believe in the job that you love and have passion for. At times of economic boom standards can waver and vary from one institute to another but at times of economic gloom clients will begin to refocus on high standards and expectations. Always believe in setting

high standards and keeping focussed on regulations, and keep abreast with the international market and standards and ensure you promote these high standards to your clients,” Careena adds.

“This can be difficult, but there are lots of ways to be in touch. Look at your menu list and focus on areas that you can add to at little cost to enhance revenue. This may require a new course, maybe one Saturday per month or one weekend per month, short one day courses or weekend ones, oh I can see you saying about ‘juggling home and family along with running a business...’ but one of best investments you can make in this climate, is to take yourself away from your routine and start to meet wonderful new people in your industry that may inspire and motivate you, which I have no doubt in turn will enhance both your personal and professional life!”

The Galligan College and Beauty Salon continues to thrive, but it has not been without hard work and continuously updating skills and keeping abreast with new ideas. With this in mind the Galligan College continues to align students with CIDESCO examinations, however, for therapists that hold Beauty Specialist and Body Therapy qualifications, you can now go forward to do the post graduate CIDESCO, part time.

Galligan’s also offer City and Guilds Hairdressing (two days per week), Teacher Trainer courses, Fashion - Theatre and Media Make-up, Advanced Waxing, Stone Therapy, Indian Head, Hopi Ear Candling, IPL, Microdermabrasion and Reflexology, Aromatherapy.

If your salon is looking for an injection of a new, up-and-coming, product range, Galligan’s will be re-launching the Italian RVB Natura professional range of skin care and make-up in the New Year, and this could be a good way to motivate both your staff and your clients.

Alternatively, CS Beauty is a training provider for complementary, beauty and sports therapy and teacher training courses in Ireland.
