St.Tropez were in demand backstage at London Fashion Week with Nichola Joss heading up the skin-finishing for a number of shows including House of Holland, Zac Posen and Erdem.
Starting off the week, Nichola referenced Brooke Shields in Blue Lagoon with a deep, matte ‘Indian Summer’ colour for the beautifully edited House of Holland show.
Next up was Erdem who chose to show his beautiful Ballet Russes-inspired collection within the gardens of a central London square. “The skin reference for Erdem’s show was ‘outside, running about in the wood’”, says Nichola Joss. “A hint of rose on the cheeks gives models that Cate Blanchett look from The Lord of the Rings.”
A light tan was created using the wash off mousse and the new pink illuminator created a dewy ethereal look that reminds us of naughty Summer nymphs and fairies flitting around the garden.
Meanwhile, designers like the accomplished Roksanda Illincic and Marios Schwab, who are both famed for a finished and polished attention to detail, required equal attention to be placed on hair, make-up, the skin and the clothes. To reflect this, Nichola went for very similar body finishes at both shows: “We are continually finding that this season is about a subtle and polished look,” she said.
Finally, projected onto a white wash wall in the St. Martin’s Lane Hotel, where Louise Goldin had invited guests to view her S/S11 collection, was a single image taken by Nick Knight. The girl is backlit in the shot, which showed off her very deep St. Tropez tan off a treat.

Eye experts back need for protection
The College of Optometrists in London has emphasised the need for tanners to wear eye protection when using sunbeds.
In a bid to achieve the perfect all-over tan some sunbed users are forgoing vital protective eye wear during tanning sessions, leaving their eyes at risk from harmful UV damage, say the college.
Dr Susan Blakeney, Optometric Advisor to the College of Optometrists, explains: “The skin on the eye lid is very thin and delicate so it’s vital to protect this area from UV rays.
“Avoiding wearing goggles or ‘winkies’ whilst using a sunbed can lead to benign eye growths called pterygium. Repeated exposure to UV may cause long-term damage which could affect sight in later life. We only have one pair of eyes, so if you want to safeguard your sight, always ensure you wear the proper protection whether on the sun bed or in the sun.”
Always ensure your salon makes hygienic eye protection available to your clients, and explain the importance of why they should wear them.
