Alyson Hogg, Founder and CEO of tanning brand Vita Liberata, has been spending her weekends backstage at the live finals of this year’s X Factor competition. Irish Beauty caught up with her as she shares backstage gossip on our favourite finalists and lets us take a peek into the X Factor tanning room...

So how did you land the X Factor gig?

“This is the second year that Vita Liberata has been working with the X Factor, after having impressed the show’s bosses so much last year with our natural, non-streaky, complexion- enhancing tan. I have been been making the trip to the studios in London every Friday to tan the contestants whilst they put the finishing touches to their performances.

How do you keep the contestants looking flawless on stage?

“To keep the standard of the show high, the lighting changes every year, and this year it has been noted that the lighting is particularly warm. This means, however, that the Vita Liberata tanning team must be very careful to ensure the tans have cool matte brown undertones.

“As such, I developed a bespoke X Factor Tan based largely on the Hawaii Spray Tan, Vita Liberata’s lightest spray tan formulation to date. This includes a mattifying ingredient that allows the skin to deal with the glare of the stage lighting.

“Whilst discussions about tans on the show so far have focussed on Cheryl Cole’s deep mahogany shade in week one (which was not a Vita Liberata tan), the contestants have largely escaped criticism due to the remarkably natural tone of the X Factor Tan. Instead, contestants like Matt Cardle have attracted praise for their miraculous makeovers, including their glowing complexions.

Do you have any insider gossip you can share with us?

“Matt’s always the first in to the tanning room. He’s just got such blue-white pale skin, that he really needs that extra boost to his colour when on stage. He is the most gentle and polite creature I have met in a very long time.

“I remember how nervous he was in Week Four when he was given ‘Bleeding Love’ to sing. He confessed to me that he was so stressed about the song that he didn’t have his usual, excited butterflies before going on - instead, a few minutes later he threw up and was hyperventilating. It was so not like him.

And what about the rest of the contestants?

“It’s been great to get to know all the contestants. I think Wagner is an ‘ageing Lothario’ (who’s natural, Brazilian skin tone doesn’t need tanning!) and Mary is a ‘total mama’. Like many grown up women, she is quite shy of the tanning room, but when she does choose to get the ‘glow’ she looks remarkably well for it!

“This shyness is one of the things we often encounter with potential customers. They have had so many bad experiences in the past. But once they try the Vita Liberata spray tan they become totally hooked.

Katie Waissel has beautiful skin. She’s a grand girl, who is not immune to

pressure. She really must ignore the papers. Cher is also partial to a tan, and she’s a tiny pop diva - she really is tiny, tiny, tiny!
