ortec Rail Group (PRG) has world wide experience in wheel /
rail friction modifiers and rail friction management solutions. PRG top of rail friction modifier applications include trams, metros, suburban trains, intercity (main line) trains and freight.
Through extensive research & trials around the world PRG have documented, in partnership and alongside customers and academic institutions, numerous trial reports and papers. Publications on Kelsan’s KELTRACK® top of rail friction modifiers have been presented at international conferences and scientific journals over the years.
What does a friction modifier do?
KELTRACK® friction modifier is designed to provide an intermediate coefficient of friction on the top of the rail. It is not a lubricant - it is a water based liquid friction modifier that is applied directly to the top of both rails in site-specific areas. Post application, the material forms as a thin dry film. In contrast with standard lubricants (oil or grease), rail treated with KELTRACK® has an intermediate coefficient of friction (0.35µ as measured with a push tribometer) which does not affect traction or braking.
This intermediate friction level on the top of the rail is optimum at reducing wheel / rail contact forces, mitigate rail and wheel wear, reduce tractive energy requirements and reduce lateral forces in a safe and reliable manner.
Noise reduction Top-of-rail noise, caused Oct/Nov 10
by wheel / rail stick-slip oscillations, is responsible for most wheel / rail curve squeal. KELTRACK® has proven on numerous test sites to achieve noise reductions of up to 22dB, with average reductions around 10 dB.
Wheel-rail noise can be divided into four broad categories: 1. Curve squeal – primarily related to lateral creepage and top of rail friction conditions. This is the high pitched sound that is most irritating to the human ear and has characteristic (usually distinct) frequencies between 800 and 1500 Hz.
2. Flanging noise in curves – primarily affected by flanging forces, rail profile, vehicle steering and gauge / flange friction conditions. This sounds to the ear something like hissing and occurs over a broad sound spectrum with diagnostic spectral features at 5000-10000 Hz.
3. Noise from rail corrugations
(usually in curves, but sometimes also in tangent). This is very often called “roaring rail”. The characteristics sound levels depend on the wavelength of corrugations and the speed of the train passing over them but usually appear between 200 and 700 Hz.
4. Noise from lower frequency rail roughness (mostly in tangent track). This is often referred to as rolling noise.
With accurate control of top of rail friction, flanging noise is reduced by an indirect function. Reducing the friction on the top of rail reduces flanging forces and hence flanging noise, another mechanism of noise reduction.
Extended rail / wheel life A friction modifier dramatically reduces lateral and flanging forces thereby reducing rail and wheel wear. By controlling

The PROTECTOR IV trackside system is designed for effective application of KELTRACK trackside friction modifier. The electronic, microprocessor controlled system allows a range of pump activation intervals combined with a choice of pump duration time settings for a fine tuned distribution of KELTRACK trackside to patented, field-mounted top-of- rail applicators.
Once the liquid material has reached the contact patch on the top of rail, it is picked up by the passing wheel. The heat of the wheel/rail interface rapidly evaporates the water content of the friction modifier. Beyond the point of application a dry thin film with controlled frictional attributes is deposited. Carry down of the dry film continues on the wheel tread.
The unique thin film properties of KELTRACK and the precise, controllable and reliable advantages of PRG Protector IV application system combine to deliver a highly effective site-specific noise and wear reduction solution without impacting critical braking or signalling performance.
