LONDON UNDERGROUND
E Enterprise helps transform the Tube
nterprise is a UK based infrastructure support services company
which has annualised revenue in excess of £1bn and employs, directly and indirectly, over 13,000 people. The company has been serving the UK utility markets for over 40 years and the public sector for over 20 years. It provides outsourced frontline service delivery on a national basis for a range of UK customers within the utility industry and the public sector.
Enterprise has been working in the rail sector for seven years, providing extensive repair and maintenance activities at 20 main London Underground stations. The services include vegetation management to structures, drainage inspection (CCTV and PGI’s) and repairs, structural painting works, deep tube seepage control, platform extension and repair, concrete and brickwork and maintenance of the heating and ventilating system.
Enterprise’s success is due to the flexibility of services and its level of expertise at adapting to this specialised environment. This was recognised in 2009 when, as part of the London Underground improvement programme, the company secured a major contract to upgrade the power supply to the sub-surface lines in support of Transport for London’s major PPP programme to ‘Transform the Tube’.
The company’s approach focuses on improving efficiency, developing innovative techniques and harnessing new technological advances. Last year this meant that approx 7,000m of track drainage was replaced during weekend shutdowns.

One of particular note is in relation to the refurbishment and reinstatement of a track drainage system on the Metropolitan line between Kings Cross and Farringdon. By combining the use of innovative products, the integration of other essential maintenance activities and respecting the short duration of the planned track possessions, the Enterprise teams brought disruption of services down to unprecedented levels.
This approach provided a saving to the customer of in the region of £30m, when compared to more traditional methods of organising and delivering this type of work
This example clearly demonstrates that with an innovative approach, the need for operational continuity does not necessarily need to be at the expense of value for money.
Services are flexible and tailored to each customer’s needs and the environmental requirements. They include planned, unplanned and emergency response maintenance on civil and building assets; capital/
