ow that the election is over, the time has come for the team
at Crossrail to concentrate on pushing the project forward. This consists of the core Crossrail team, its programme delivery partner Crossrail Central (made up of Bechtel, Halcrow and Systra) and other partner organisations which include Network Rail and London Underground.
“We are now seeing all of these teams pull together to get designs completed, some of the tenders out and the enabling advanced works mobilised and underway,” says the project’s technical director Chris Sexton.
“In terms of what is happening on the ground, construction has begun at Royal Oak Portal and Pudding Mill Lane. Advanced work has started on all of the central London stations, which
includes Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Paddington.
“The station designs are progressing well and moving towards completion and the project is at the stage.”

“As we approach full
mobilisation, we are focussing very much on safety. Our approach towards safety being target zero.”
Target zero represents a set of principles around the safety of the Crossrail team including that every member of the team has the right to go home at the end of the day unharmed, that
After being given the green light by the coalition government, the team at Crossrail can finally concentrate on the task in hand. Rail Technology Magazine askedChris Sexton how the project is going
all harm is preventable and that it requires everybody on the project to work hard to achieve this
“I think what is interesting about Target Zero is that it assumes that all harm is preventable and that there isn’t an acceptable or even expected level of harm to people on the Crossrail project. Our target and our assumption is to get through the entire project without harming anyone.
“This is being cascaded down through our partners and principal contractors to the sub- contractors working on site and getting this all right is crucial to getting the project off on the right footing.”
So what has Crossrail done to ensure that safety?
“In terms of security we are liaising with other relevant agencies such as the British Transport and Metropolitan Police forces to ensure that we have an appropriate level of physical security in terms of anti-terrorism measures in all of our stations.
“As far as CCTV and fire protection are concerned, we are working to London Underground and Network Rail standards and building on those as we see necessary. Crossrail will have the most appropriate security infrastructure built into it from day one, which is being designed into it now.”
Another issue which is dominating the project at the moment is funding. Although we are facing a time of severely
