75,000 steel sleepers for Airdrie-Bathgate G
MT Manufacturing has supplied the 75,000 steel sleepers
for the 14 mile stretch linking Airdrie to Bathgate due for re- opening in December 2010.
The line will be new electrified double track and be the fourth link between Glasgow and Edinburgh, primarily for commuters.
Sleepers supplied were mainly the standard 560H hook-in and a requirement for a stretch of guard rail and also UTX sleepers all manufactured by GMT. The Balfour Beatty track-laying NTC machine was used to lay the track at a rate of about 1,200 yards per day.
The last stretch of sleepers was completed at the end of August and Network Rail fitted the
ceremonial “golden clips” to the final section that was laid.
Over the last few years, GMT has supplied steel sleepers to several projects in Scotland including the re-opened line from Stirling to Alloa and Kincardine in 2006 which used 35,000 sleepers.
New and revived routes and a programme of electrification in Scotland will help to improve timings and reduce road congestion in the region.
GMT has been manufacturing steel sleepers for over 10 years and has been Network Rail’s exclusive supplier for seven years. During that time, over 2,500,000 steel sleepers have been supplied to the UK market.
GMT expanded the range of approved sleepers to include
guard rail, UTX, short and hollow sleepers. GMT also manufactures a number of different types of smaller sleepers for the overseas markets.
For over 20 years, GMT Manufacturing Ltd has also been supplying the rail industry with fully approved stainless steel framework interiors for location case and REBs. In recognition of the level of commitment, response time, delivery and service in the supply of stainless steel framework GMT was recently awarded Supplier of the Year 2009 by Unipart Rail.
