MCV 24/09/10 69 TAG-TEAM INTERVIEW

Tim Ellis, HMV Head of Games

This week, HMV’s games boss Tim Ellis questions David Lilley about the Eurogamer Expo, fantasy rugby and catching the cycling bug...

Vs

Eurogamer Expo is almost here and looks like it will sell out in an even bigger venue. Why do you think this is? The Expo this year has a great line- up of pre-release code, is at just the right moment for the publishers to promote product and is right in the centre of London. I’m surprised it didn’t sell-out sooner.

The real reason I won’t be

available is we stupidly booked the show on the same weekend as the Ryder Cup. I’m going to be sitting upstairs when the show’s closed watching the highlights on a 16 by 9 foot screen.

You were pretty tasty on the Rugby field in your youth. Who from the games industry would have made your front row? And who’s chippy enough to have been scrum half? Bloody good question. I can think of the killer southern hemisphere heavyweight front row but better not name them. Huband for scrum half – tricky, tough, nippy and will have a go at anyone.

Rupert Loman vs Charles Foster Kane –

You didn’t answer ‘It’s all down to me’. Why not? One of the great successes of the Expo is the fact it’s run by us – the whole company works at the venue from build-up to breakdown. It’s a great feeling to have everyone involved. And me, clearly.

I know you claim that you’ll be far too busy working to meet and greet at the show, but we know the score. Which games will you be wasting most time playing that weekend? Tricky to pick just a few but one of the Microsoft titles will blow the doors off! We showed the over 18 area to one of our community members recently and he’s still going on about it.

who’s the most philanthropic? Any chance that Rupert might go power mad towards the end? The end’s a long way away – he’s only a nipper. I don’t know anyone more interested in giving others the fair chance they deserve, more than Rupert is. CFK made better Carlsberg ads though – that’s definite.

You’ve just refound your cycling bug and got a new road bike. I’m sure the bike looks great but how do you look in Lycra? Like an over-stuffed Cumberland. It’s not pretty. Enjoying it though and all thanks to the badgering from you and a few others. Have you committed to Lands End to John O’Groats next year yet, Tim?

And who will you be interviewing for next week’s Tag Team? Sega’s UK MD John Clark.

You’ve worked for, and ran, a fair few publications in your time. What’s the one publication you wished you’d work for and why? I loved working at Future in the early days on both gaming and consumer titles but I always wanted to work at EMAP on some of their spoddy outdoor mags. They had a brilliant technique of explaining complicated things without making you feel stupid in a day when printing pages and pages of text without pictures was the norm. Loved those mags.

Where’s the stag do? It’s a carefully guarded secret. Can you imagine how many people want to stitch me up? It’s a lot.

Finally - My wife fancies Eddie Izzard. Discuss carefully! Sarah is a woman with impeccable taste in men.
