QUITE A LOT has changed since the Xbox 360 team last invited key retailers and publishers to gather for a friendly drink and a far from friendly quiz – and offered all our readers the chance to win all the night’s prizes in one fell swoop. The event of the summer was the launch of the slim and sexy 250GB Xbox 360. The impact of the new model was instant – and recent market data
indicates that it will be a long-lasting boost for console sales.
In the first three months of the Xbox
360 S being on the market, sales of the console jumped 87.7 per cent, 118.6 per cent and then 65.6 per cent compared to the same three months last year. It’s also predicted that Microsoft is now on course to sell 8.07m units in
the year ending May 2011 – that would represent an increase of 3.2m. More recently, of course, Halo: Reach was launched – further proving that Bungie’s baby is a franchise for the ages. It shifted 330,000 units in the UK on day one, and generated $200m at retail around the world on the same day. The critics were as rabid as the consumers, which meant that the game
chalked up an instant Metacritic average of 93 per cent.
Next up is Kinect, which hits the UK on November 10th with over 15 launch titles including Kinect Sports, Joy Ride, Kinectimals, and Dance Central. To play them, you need Kinect and an Xbox 360. Handily, you might be just eight questions away from winning the latter (plus eight other ace prizes).
