Classic swashbuckling game arrives on Wii and puts players up against a crew of infamous pirates…

by Billy Langsworthy

SINCE THE 1987 original gave consumers their first taste of pirate life, Pirates has established itself as a fan favourite. The new game will see players battling against the evil Marquis de la Montalban on the Wii. In the action adventure title, players are able to sail across the sea in style with 27 different ships, each fully customisable. And when docked, consumers can indulge in a range of land-based activities like searching for hidden treasure, dealing with troublesome locals, escaping prisons and risking life and limb in other courageous adventure missions. Using the Wii Remote, players can even engage in classic mini-games from the original title including sword fights, ship battles and dancing. The title will also introduce two new exclusive mini- games – Bombardment and Lock Picking. Consumers also have the opportunity to make the most of their rugged pirate looks by wooing the governor’s

daughter. They can do this by winning duels for affection, taking part in dances and even buying their way to her heart by splashing out on gifts.

By making the transition to the Wii, players can experience swordplay like never before as the Wii Remote becomes a weapon for deadly duels. These take place in taverns, ships and even inside the governor’s mansions. If players find themselves victorious against pirate legends including Blackbeard and Henry Morgan, they’re given the skills to find hidden treasures. Pirates offers enough exciting gameplay to ensure those unfamiliar with the series will see its appeal, while die-hard fans will be interested in the new Wii mini-games.

Prepare for loop, bowl, tube and ramp-filled races as Trackmania hits the Wii and DS, courtesy of Ubisoft…

by Billy Langsworthy

TRACKMANIA is famous for its crazy, physics-bending racing gameplay that makes it one of the most unique racing IPs on the market.

Now the latest instalment is landing on Nintendo consoles. The PC classic is available as Trackmania Turbo on the DS and simply Trackmania on the Wii. Players can use the Wii Remote to drive a variety of cars including small superminis and Formula One vehicles on tracks filled with stomach-turning loops, bowls, tubes and ramps. Trackmania features over 200 gravity- testing tracks spread over multiple race modes. The Classic Race mode sees players compete against each other and the clock for the best time, while the game’s Puzzle Mode blends racing and construction. Here users can drive across tracks filled with jumps and traps, with the aim of completing a circuit in the least number of attempts. The online mode allows players to download tracks and take on others

across the globe, while a local multiplayer mode allows up to four people to compete from one console. Players are not entirely at the mercy of the game’s insane pre-designed tracks either. The Trackmania editor allows consumers to create their own circuits with more than 1,000 construction blocks at their disposal. Gamers can fill courses will all manner of jumps and boost pads that would test the nerve of even the most fearless driver. With its amazing level of track customisation and races filled with elements unseen in most other racing titles, Trackmania is a racer that gives Wii and DS consumers a driving experience unlike anything else.
