ends his holdout Left tackle signs his contract tender, but

mustmiss next 3 games ASSOCIATED PRESS

Chargers left tackle Marcus

McNeill ended his holdout Sat- urday when he signed his one- year contract tender as a re- stricted free agent. However, he must sit out the

next three games because he and wide receiver Vincent Jack- son were placed on the roster exempt list by GeneralManager A.J. Smith on Aug. 20. McNeill will be eligible to play Oct. 17 at St. Louis. McNeill said on his Twitter

account, “great to be back to- day.. GO BOLTS.” He signed in time to travel with the Chargers (1-1) to Seattle for their game on Sunday. NeitherMcNeill nor his agent

responded to requests for com- ment. With his pay severely slashed by the Chargers, there’s a possibility McNeill decided to come in believing that a long- termdeal could be worked out. “It’s great,” left guard Kris

Dielman said in a text message to the Associated Press. “Our teamgot better today and in the future with him signing today. It’s awesome.”

McNeill’s return came three

days after the Chargers failed to trade Jackson by a deadline agreed to by the NFL and the players’ union. Jackson has been suspended by the NFL for the first three games because of his second DUI since 2006. If Jackson does sign, he also would have to serve a three- game suspension on the roster exempt list. Jackson’s agent, Neil Schwartz, said Wednesday that it’s doubtful Jackson will report this year. McNeill’s original four-year

contract expired at the end of last season. But because this is an uncapped year, he would have needed six seasons to be- come an unrestricted free agent. When McNeill hadn’t signed

his $3.168 million tender as a restricted free agent by June 15, the Chargers were entitled to reduce the tender to 110 percent of his 2009 salary, or $630,000. That will be further reduced by each game he doesn’t play. McNeill played in the Pro

Bowl following the 2006 and 2007 seasons. The roster exempt list is a

hardball tactic used before by Smith. In 2005, he placed tight end Antonio Gates on the list in an attempt to break an impasse. Gatesmissed the opener, a close loss to Dallas that contributed to the Chargers missing the

ed left tackle Chad Clifton and left guard Daryn Colledge as probable for Monday night’s game against the Chicago Bears. Both practiced Saturday as

the Packers finalized plans be- fore the matchup of unbeaten NFC North leaders. Packers Coach Mike McCa-

rthy said Clifton is the team’s starting left tackle. Clifton has sore knees, and McCarthy said the 11-year pro’s playing status won’t be determined until just before the game. l BEARS: Chicago has ruled

out starting left tackle Chris Williams and backup safetyMa- jor Wright for their game against Green Bay because of hamstring injuries. Both were hurt in the first

quarter last week against Dal- las.

DALLAS COWBOYS AT HOUSTON TEXANS, 1

ERIC MILLER/REUTERS Brett Favre has struggled after missing offseason workouts, training camp and part of the preseason. Vikings, Cowboys start off cold nfl from D1

with Super Bowl dreams. There wasn’t much Super

Bowl talk entering this season about the Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Chi- cago Bears. But they’re among the league’s eight 2-0 teams. The Bears, at least, are only four seasons removed fromreaching a Super Bowl and had a compar- atively decent record of 7-9 last season. The Chiefs and Bucca- neers totaled only seven wins last season under a pair of rookie head coaches, Kansas City’s Todd Haley and Tampa’s RaheemMorris. “Both of those teams made

changes,” Reeves said. “They’re both in sort of rebuildingmode, and their young players are really coming through.”

The story of the season But the bigger early-season

focus has been the so-far-disap- pointing teams. The Vikings beat the Cowboys soundly in a conference semifinal last sea- son before losing at New Or- leans in overtime in the NFC championship game. Favre has called last seasonhis best by far, as he had 33 touchdown passes and only seven interceptions and finished fourth in the leaguemost valuable player bal- loting. Favre underwent offseason

ankle surgery and again flirted with retirement, finally joining the Vikings in mid-August for his 20th NFL season. Favre turns 41 in October. He’s a grandfather. He missed offsea- son workouts, training camp and part of the preseason. But he’d followed a similar

script when readying for last season and he still had thrived, so there were reasons for Favre and the Vikings to believe that things might go just as smooth- ly this time around. Thus far, that hasn’t happened. Favre has one touchdown

pass and four interceptions in the season’s first two games. He

also has lost a fumble, and the Minnesota offense has sput- tered badly in losses to the Saints andMiamiDolphins. The Vikingshave totaled 19 points in two games and have desperately missed wide receiver Sidney Rice, who is expected to be sidelined for at least half the season after undergoing hip surgery. Favre’s slow start has pro-

ducedwhispers that the Vikings might have to turn to backup quarterback Tarvaris Jackson. Five quarterbacks league-wide were benched during last week- end’s games and former Wash- ington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann said, “There should have been onemore and that would have been Minneso- ta.”

Theismann said he reached

that conclusion after watching Favremisfire on a deep pass late in theMiami game. “It’s not going to work,” The-

ismann said. “He lost Sidney Rice. With all the time he missed in training camp, that’s showing up. Minnesota, for the good of the franchise, is going to have tomake a decision.” Vikings wide receivers have

struggled without Rice. Wide- outs Percy Harvin and Bernard Berrian have combined for only nine catches for 71 yards, and Favre’s top target has been tight end Visanthe Shiancoe. But Favre and the wide

receivers haven’t been the Vi- kings’ only problems. Tailback Adrian Peterson has run for 232 yards in two games but couldn’t get the ball into the end zone on four rushing plays, the first of which started at the Miami 10-yard line, late in the fourth quarter last Sunday with the Vikings trailing by four points. The Dolphins stopped Peterson on a fourth-down attempt from the 1-yard line.

A lot on the line Now the Vikings just might

be playing for their season Sun- day.

“They know the gravity of an

0-3 start,” Vikings Coach Brad Childress said of his players at a midweek news conference. “I think it’s about finding yourself as a football teamhere.” Cowboys Coach Wade Phil-

lips is saying similar things about his players needing to be resolute to find a way through their early difficulties. “It’s tough right now,” Phillips

said at a news conference. “It’s tough for them. We didn’t ex- pect to do this. But this is what happened. This iswherewe are. We can’t change that. But we can do something about it to get better.” Things might be even tough-

er for theCowboys, whomust go on the road to face a Texans team that’s playing well and coming off wins over the India- napolis Colts and the Redskins. The Cowboys have been un-

done by their own gaffes, partic- ularly during their opening loss to Washington. They handed the Redskins a touchdown with no time remaining on the clock in the first halfwith a fumble on an ill-conceived short pass to running back Tashard Choice, and had a would-be winning touchdown pass from quarter- back Tony Romo to wide receiv- er Roy Williams in the final seconds of the game wiped out by a holding penalty on fill-in right tackle Alex Barron. New place kicker David Bue-

hler has missed a field goal attempt in each game and the Cowboys abandoned the run early in last Sunday’s loss to the Bears, managing only 36 rush- ing yards. “With Dallas, it’s all the mis-

takes,” Reeves said. “They’re re- ally beating themselves. They very easily could have won both of their games. But Dallas is only one game back in the division. ... Certainly you can’t be excited about being 0-2. The only good thing is it’s still so early in the year. There’s still a long way to go.” maskem@washpost.com
