The Virginia State Corporation Commission seeks a Com- missioner of Insurance to be responsible for all aspects of insurance industry regulation. The Commissioner of Insurance advises the Commission and the General Assembly concerning insurance issues and identifies and recommends solutions in regulatory areas. Subject to the supervision of the State Corporation Commission, this position develops the Bureau of Insurance’s legislative program, reviews proposed legislation and litigation matters, develops position papers, and appears before Federal and State legislative committees and subcommittees. The Commissioner of Insurance is responsible for monitoring the insurance industry, including Federal law, policies and procedures to identify regulatory issues and for making regulatory decisions to address these issues. This position will establish goals, objectives, and management policies for the Bureau of Insurance and will review staff policy, examination reports, and recommenda- tions. Public presentations and travel are required.


Qualifications


Preferred but not mandatory qualifications for this position include significant professional experience in insurance reg- ulation and management, as well as an educational back- ground or experience in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, or Accounting. Graduate degrees in financial subject areas or a law degree are also positive qualifications, as are managerial and supervisory skills in running complex organizations. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to manage staff and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the General Assembly, Commission staff, other state and federal regulatory agencies, industry personnel, and the general public.
