Walter Reed Public Meeting Announcement


Section 106 Process


Under the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Act of 1990, the United States Army is proceeding with the closure of Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) and consequent disposal of excess and surplus property. Under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, the Army must take into account its actions and its effect on historic properties. The Army has determined the effect of this undertaking is adverse on the integrity of WRAMC historic properties in terms of feeling and association. The Army has initiated Section 106 consultation to seek ways to avoid, reduce or mitigate further adverse effects on historic properties as portions are transferred out of federal control. A copy of "A Citizen's Guide to Section 106 Review" is available at www.achp.gov/docs/citizenguide.pdf.


The public is a participant in the Section 106 process and its views are essential to informed federal decision making. In fulfillment of the Army's plan to involve the public by providing information on the transfer of property out of federal control and to seek public comment and input, a public meeting will be held on October 4, 2010 at 7:00pm in the MWR Conference Room in Delano Hall (Building 11) at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
