Wise holds off the Raiders

5-foot-6 Shepard comes up big with late-game interception

BY JAMESWAGNER Wise defensive back Chaudli-

er Shepard admits he isn’t known for his jumping ability. Among the shortest players on the field, he is often lost among themass of bodies. So when the 5-foot-6, 140-

pound sophomore picked off a pass from Eleanor Roosevelt quarterback Shawn Pettywith a little more than a minute re- maining to preserve his team’s 22-14 Prince George’s 4A win in Upper Marlboro on Saturday afternoon, it wasn’t his 26-inch vertical jump kicking in. It was something else. “Adrenaline,” he said. “It’s

just adrenaline. I just got up there and took the ball. That’s what I do.” The first half featured a pair

of sputtering offenses, ending in an 8-8 deadlock. The Pumas (3-1, 3-1) could muster only one trip to the red zone, scoring

CROSS-COUNTRY Bruning, Bosse take Bull Run Invitational

Walter Johnson boys, Severna Park girls win team titles

BY CARL LITTLE

parkton, md.—Runners have lost plenty over the years on the three-mile course at Hereford High, widely considered one of the most difficult on the East Coast. They’ve lost the skin off their knees and elbows. Their dignity. Their lunch. Braden Bruning would have given all of that for a win at the Bull Run Invitational on Satur- day. Luckily, he didn’t have to. The Linganore junior handled the 90-foot climb and descent— thefamed“Dip”—anda very hot sun with flair before outkicking two runners down the stretch to win the boys’ elite race in 16 minutes 33 seconds. Walter Johnson senior Anna Bosse was the girls’ overall winner in 19:47. “This pastweekin practicewe

did lots of hills,” Bruning said. “I was ready for this.” Other runners, though,

weren’t so ready. Meet officials driving all-terrain vehicles had to cart more than 10 incapacitat- ed bodies off the Dip and other parts of the course. Walter Johnson had one of its

top scorers pass out during the race, but was able to win the boys’ team competition with its depth. Third-place finisher Nick Regan (16:39) paced the two- time defending state champion Wildcats past Churchill, Loyola Blakefield and Quince Orchard. The girls from Severna Park

won for the second straight year by a comfortable margin over River Hill, Mount Hebron and Hereford. It was an impressive perfor-

when defensive back DeAndre Smith, also the team’s quarter- back, stepped in front of an Eleanor Roosevelt pass and re- turned it 55 yards for a touch- down. The Raiders (3-1, 3-1) scored their first touchdown with a bit of luck when Petty fumbled going in fromthe 1, the ball bouncing into the hands of running back Jairus Cook, who ran it in. But in the second half, the

Pumas relied on the legs of Smith and their speedy running back Uriah Bethea, who fin- ished with 126 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries and converted two two-point con- versions. Roosevelt got back into the

game with the scrambling and arm of Petty, who threw for 198 yards. The Raiders pulled even at 14-14 with a five-yard run by senior fullback Cody Acker near the end of the third quarter. And though theymanaged to

move the ball against the Puma defense in the second half, the Raiders hurt themselves with turnovers. Three second-half giveaways, including two fum- bles on quarterback-running back exchanges, were costly. One led to a Wise touchdown

early in the third quarter. But things were still even to

start the final quarter, with the heat approaching 90 degrees and showing little sign of abat- ing.Wise’s receivers had repeat- edly told Smith to get them the ball, promising to make a play. Shepard, who also plays wide receiver, was the one who delivered, outjumping a de- fender for a crucial 25-yard catch. Itwas Smith’s only—and biggest — completion. “I was just winded from the

game,” Smith said. “It’s hot outside, you know, a long game, a physical game. I just know that if I throw it up to my receivers and give them a chance to catch the ball, that they will come through forme.” Seven plays later, Bethea

scored from the 1 to give the Pumas the winningmargin. wagnerjames@washpost.com

mance, given that three of the Falcons’ top five scorers were held out of the race because of injury. Jodie Clouser led the way for Severna Park by finishing third overall (20:44). “I only ran five girls,” long-

time Severna Park Coach Ed Purpura said. “A lot of coaches bail out of elite races with inju- ries like these. It justshowswhat tremendous depth we have.” Loyola’s Matt Jablonski, the

pre-race favorite, started fast at the start of the boys’ race. He controlled the first mile, putting significant distance between himself and the chase pack. But The Dip robbed Jablonski of all his strengthandBruning, Regan andHereford’sMason Rivera, all running right together, reeled him in. The trio was all alone entering the final half mile and,

in a sprint to the finish, Bruning showed whose kick was superi- or.

The girls’ race lacked drama

at the end—or during any other portion of it. Bosse took the lead right from the beginning and it only swelled as she sped along. She didn’t show any signs of tiring until she nearly collapsed in the finishing chute. Maura Linde of Century, the

pre-race favorite, was second, a full 30 seconds behind Bosse. It was the fourth time that

Bosse has run at Hereford, which doubles as the state meet course, andshe’swonhere twice. “This is my favorite course,”

Bosse, the 2008 Maryland 4A champion, said. “There’s lots of hills. I like to take advantage of that.”
