Devol “Rock” Brett,87, a highly
decorated Air Force lieutenant general who in retirement be- came a private military consul- tant, died Aug. 14 at a hospital in Naples, Fla.He had cancer. Gen. Brett, the son of an Army
Air Corps lieutenant general, be- gan his military career in Germa- ny and flew transport aircraft during the Berlin Airlift in 1948. He took part in more than 100
combat missions in the Korean War flying P-51s and flew jet fighters in the Vietnam War. He was shot down by anti-aircraft fire in Vietnam and ejected from his F-4C before it crashed into the Gulf of Tonkin. He broke his nose and cheek-
bone during the incident and was picked up by a search and rescue team. His electronics expert, who had been flying in the seat behind him, did not survive the crash. In 1978, Gen. Brett retired
from the Air Force as commander of Allied Air Forces Southern Eu- rope, and commander of U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s Sixteenth Air Force. He became a private military consultant for the Institute for Defense Analyses and retired in 2009. While at IDA, Gen. Brett specialized in search and rescue and personnel recovery, inspired by the loss of his electronics ex- pert in Vietnam. Carroll Devol Brett was born
in San Francisco. He was a 1945 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., where he was given the nickname “Rock” for his toughness. He re- ceived a master’s degree in inter- national policy from George WashingtonUniversity. His military decorations in-
cluded two awards of the Distin- guished ServiceMedal, the Silver Star, four awards of the Legion of Merit, three awards of the Distin- guished Flying Cross, the Bronze StarMedal, the Purple Heart and eight awards of the AirMedal. In retirement, Gen. Brett lived
in Alexandria and in the mid- 2000s moved toNaples. His first wife, Hermine May-
erl, died in 1999. Survivors in- clude his second wife, Lou Longi- no Brett of Naples; two children from his first marriage,George H. Brett II of Falls Church and Karo- line Wickett of Springfield; a sis- ter; seven grandchildren;andone great-grandson. When his son was born, Gen.
Brett was stationed in Germany and decided to announce the birth with flair. His wife’s parents were Austri-
an and lived a short flight away from his air base. He flew his P-47 to their vil-
lage, buzzed low over their house to get their attention and then dropped a canister with a para- chute attached. Inside, was this message: “It’s a boy — George Howard Brett II.”
